The European nation United Kingdom will be the host for the 47th G7 Summit in Carbis Bay, St. Ives, Cornwall. It will be attended by 7 participating countries from the G7, i.e. Canada, France, Germany, Italy, U.K, USA, Japan. In addition to this, finally two representatives from EU Nations. The dates of the Summit will be from 11^th June to 13^th June 2021’. Furthermore, the Summit takes place annually in one of the G7 nations.

Camp David, United States was the venue for the 46th Summit, that was cancelled. The cancellation of 46th Summit took place due to the pandemic COVID-19. The Summit that will take place in United Kingdom should go forward as planned. This is until there is a cancellation that can take place due to the effects of pandemic in U.K. A country that is currently under demonstrations against the lock down, due to the pandemic COVID-19.

There will be discussions in the 47th Summit who aims to discuss and combat ways to fight the current pandemic. Hence, as well as similar diseases that can influence the world. Having a global impact on world nations and world affairs. Ironically, the G7 summit includes all 7 countries from Top global economies. According to the agendas of the Summit, there will be talks with regards to Climate Change and other environmental hazards. Global issues that have influenced the world and the world affairs. The 44^th G7 Summit took place in Canada in Quebec from 8^th – 9^th June 2018. Furthermore, it was a major influence on the state of the world affairs. While, the 45^th G7 Summit held in Biarritz, France in 2019 was the last summit that actually took place. Ironically, due to the cancellation of the 46th Summit taking place in US.

THE PARTICIPATING NATIONS & ITS REPS:

The 47^th G7 Summit taking place in United Kingdom is one of the most important Summits. This is since the last decade, due to the current pandemic & World affairs taking new heights. It will be taking place from 11^th June to 13^th June & will be attended by all G7 countries. Canada, one of the key G7 nations, will be represented by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The re-elected Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau is son of former PM Pierre Trudeau. This is for the second consecutive time since he became the 23rd PM in 2015.

France, the host nations of last Summit that took place before the cancelled one. President Emmanuel Macron will be representing the French in G7. This is followed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel who represents Germany & Italy represented by Mario Draghi. The current Prime Minister Boris Johnson shall be representing the host nation U.K. PM Yoshihide will be the proud rep. of Japan. President Joe Biden will be the representative of USA in G7. The EU representatives are Charles Michel, The Council President and Ursula Von Der Leyen, the Commission President.

All the representatives of the Summit are global leaders and hold the most key position from their honourable nations. Ironically, being either the President or Premier of their respectable countries. G7 Summit held every year hold key agendas that are for the rest of the countries. The Prime Minister in his speech was affirmative for African descents. According to Justin, There are commitments from our side in building an equal and more inclusive country. He also said that this Decade is a key opportunity to highlight the vital contributions. Primarily, the people of African descent have made in the development and prosperity of Canada.

He further emphasised on the importance of the day. While saying that “It also provides a vital framework for the state and non-state actors. Hence, for the sake of taking measures towards the recognition and justice. Furthermore, the development to fight against racism, discrimination and the on-going inequalities. These are all that are faced by the Canadians of African descent.”

A BRIEF HISTORY OF FOOTBALL WORLD CUPS:

The first FIFA world Cup was held 90 years ago in 1930 in Uruguay & was won by Uruguay. Held in Italy was the second edition & later the third edition took place in France. After the third edition there was a gap of 12 years. The gap took place due to the World War II that resulted in postponement of two FIFA world cups.

FIFA world cups started to resume from Brazil in 1950, i.e. Post World War II. Later, Swiss were the host of the World Cup in the year 1954. The region of Scandinavia from Europe came into the limelight for the first time. Sweden hosted the 6th edition in year 1958 for first time, and played in finals as well. Chile were the host of the 7th FIFA world Cup edition in 1962. England hosted the 8th edition for the first time & under Bobby Moore became the World Champions for the first time as well in 1966.

In 1970, North America came into hosting list for the first time with the world Cup being hosted in Mexico. The 10th edition of FIFA world cups took place in divided Germany later in 1974. It was West Germany to be precise that were the hosts. Argentina hosted the 11th edition of FIFA & became the world champions for the first time as well. Spain were the hosts for the first time of the 12th edition, while Italy won the Championship for the third time. Mexico hosted the cup again in 1986 and then later in 1990 it took place in Italy. For the first time the Super Power, USA became the hosts of the 15th FIFA edition in year 1994. 16^th edition took place in France and French were the winners of the home World Cup.

FIFA WORLD CUPS SINCE 2002:

Interestingly, the 17^th edition became the first one in Asia, i.e. Japan and South Korea became the joint host in 2002. Brazil hosted the Cup again in 2014, preceded by Germany in 2006 & later South Africa in 2010. The latest edition of the FIFA world Cups was the 21^st edition. Held two years back in 2018, the 21st edition was also the first edition of FIFA world Cups in Russia.

CONSTRUCTION OF STADIUMS & OTHER DEVELOPMENTS IN QATAR:

Qatar 2022 shall be taking place in newly constructed stadiums, i.e. eight stadiums in all. This is to host the biggest trophy in history of all games. FLUCTUATIONS IN GAS PRICES

A sinking loonie and rising carbon taxes are among the things that could end low gas prices this year. Canadians can expect a volatile year for gas prices, says a new forecast.

Canadian drivers are enjoying some of the lowest gas prices in years. However, don’t expect that to last through 2019, says price comparison site GasBuddy.

In a report issued Wednesday, GasBuddy analyst Dan McTeague warned Canadians. The warning said to be prepared for “a wild ride at the pump” this year.

“Canadian motorists can expect a year of extreme volatility at the pumps for 2019. As the world markets move sharply in varying directions for the foreseeable future,” McTeague wrote.

Traders are uncertain which way the global economy is going. Therefore, the oil prices are likely to swing wildly in the months ahead. However, at the start of the spring season, there can be price fluctuations. Later, The Canadians could see the highest prices at the pumps since 2014, McTeague said.

The loonie has lost 10 cents U.S. in value over the past year. It is enough to push gas prices up by 2.5 cents a litre. On top of that, eight of 10 Canadian provinces are bringing some changes. Therefore, it shall be the introduction of a new carbon tax this year. Additionally, or an increase to their existing one by April 1.

CLIMATE CHANGE & OIL PRICES

This “will almost certainly force up the cost of filling your tank. Hence, Just in time for the summer driving season and switchover to more expensive summer gasoline,” McTeague wrote.

The federal government is introducing a carbon tax in provinces without their own plan. The reason is to combat climate change. This will automatically result in the tax that will translate into an extra five cents per litre on gas prices. Ottawa plans to send rebate cheques to consumers in those provinces to offset the additional cost.

MC-Teague Said Vancouver shall overtake Montreal this year as the North American city with highest gas prices taxes. The province of British Columbia is all set to increase its taxes. This includes Trans Link Tax and a carbon tax on 1st April, all in connection with Vancouver takeover from Montreal.

“IF WE GO INTO A GLOBAL RECESSION ALL BETS ARE OFF”

But there is one thing that could alter that forecast and bring lower gas prices. A global recession, something a growing number of experts say could be just around the corner.

“If we go into a global recession all bets are off,” McTeague told Huff Post Canada. “The price of every commodity would absolutely collapse. But I don’t see that happening.”

A new agreement between the U.S. and China that ends the trade conflict between the world’s two largest economies. This would be enough to calm nerves about a global recession, McTeague said.

In the meantime, Canadians are enjoying some of the lowest gas prices in years. Thanks to rapidly dropping prices in December, the average gas prices in Canada was around $1.02 per liter on Jan. 2, the lowest average since July of 2017.

The ECR Community Shrinkage and On-shelf Availability Group (OSA) and NCR have published a comprehensive report. Its a report that assesses the potential impact of self-checkout (SCO) technologies on retail loss. In addition to this, provides best practices and guidance on how to address and balance risks.

“Retailing is becoming ever more dependent upon a host of technologies. Hence, many of which are increasingly focused upon improving the customer journey,” said John Fonteijn. John is the honorary chair of the ECR Community Shrinkage and On-shelf Availability Group. “This report will help retail organisations to continue to reap the benefits. The key benefits that self-scan technologies can bring while doing so within a sustainable business model.”

The payments revolution Retailers count their stock loss typically. This is as a percentage of their sales. Hence, which according to a prior ECR report, is about 0.67% of grocery retail sales. The new report from ECR and NCR, Self-Checkout in Retail suggests a typical retailer can
experience an increase in stock loss of one basis point for every 1% of sales that go through fixed SCO machines. For instance, a typical store with 25% of its sales value going through fixed SCO could see additional stock losses of 0.25% of sales value.

STORES WITH SCAN AND GO:

Stores using scan-and-go technologies could see an increase of between 0.7 and 10.4 basis points of additional loss for every 1% of sales processed. In the study, the average utilization rate for scan-and-go was 2.8% of sales value, suggesting additional stock loss of between 0.01% and 0.29% of sales value.

The report goes on to consider ways in which SCO technologies can be controlled, including a range of emerging technologies. The report also underlines the importance of monitoring data on the risk of loss relating to SCO as well as adopting a more joined-up approach to SCO management and control.

A new shopping platform announced at the World Economic Forum aims to change the way consumers buy many brand-name products. Loop, like the platform, is called. It would do away with disposable containers for items such as shampoo and laundry detergents. These are from some of the world’s biggest manufacturers. The delivery is always unique i.e. to be delivered in sleek and reusable containers. Washed and refilled, these will be picked up at your door.

“Loop is about the future of consumption. And one of the tenets is that garbage shouldn’t exist,” says Tom Szaky. TerraCycle, it is a NewJersey based international re-cycling company and Tom Szaky is the CEO. TerraCycle is the company behind Loop.

“Removing plastics from the ocean is not enough. We need to get at the whole idea of disposability and un-reusable items,” says Szaky. “We’re going back to the milkman model of the 1950s. You buy the milk but the milk company owns the bottle. This is the bottle that you leave in the milk box to be picked up when you’re done with it.”

Companies partnering with Loop include Nestlé, Procter & Gamble, PepsiCo, and other top brands.

“Our goal is that by 2030, all of our packagings will be reusable or recyclable,” says Virginie Helias, vice-president, and chief sustainability officer at Procter & Gamble. Loop, she says, “is a very new idea and somewhat risky because no one has tried it. But the response has been very positive. To be part of the pilot project 10 of our brands have been selected.  We will implement with a plan to add more later pending positive results.”
Pantene shampoo, for instance, “will come in a beautifully decorated, lightweight-aluminum pump container,” Helias says. “Tide in the U.S. will come in a stainless-steel bottle with a durable twist cap. Cascade will come in ultra-durable packaging. Crest mouthwash will come in a glass bottle. The idea is ultra-durability, convenience, and also ultra-luxurious packaging.”

The rise of the “Zero Waste” movement and concern about the environment has led many businesses to try to reduce packaging and un-reusable containers. The loop is unusual in its international scope and the size of the companies participating.

Initially, Loop will offer about 300 products, with plans to add to the list later. According to TerraCycle, partners include Procter & Gamble, PepsiCo, Nestlé, Unilever, Mars Petcare, The Clorox Company, The Body Shop, Coca-Cola, Mondelez International, Danone, Jacobs Douwe Egberts, BIC, Nature’s Path, Thousand Fell, Greenhouse, Grilliance, Preserve, Carrefour, UPS and the sustainable-resource management company Suez.

Greenpeace joined in a panel about sustainable consumption. Loop was officially announced on Thursday in Davos, Switzerland. Initially, Greenpeace was also under criticism for creating much of the plastic waste that is a hazard for the World’s oceans.  Jennifer Morgan, the international executive director of Greenpeace, said beforehand, “While Greenpeace welcomes the aim of the Loop Alliance to move away from throwaway culture and disposability. What the platform will mean for the environment depends on whether corporations worldwide are actually ready to change their business models, or if this effort just becomes a distracting side project to generate positive PR.”

She warned that most businesses behind the initiative are still expanding the production of single-use plastic. The company promised more sustainable, un-reusable & durable packaging. This is in response to their earlier promises towards packaging and the dedication of the company’s representative.

Robberies of Circle K convenience stores have decreased by 18 per cent after shop owners in Peel Region removed posters from certain
windows.

It’s called the Clear Zone program and Circle K tried it out back in 2013 when Peel Regional Police approached the company with the idea.

Peel police’s crime prevention constable, Amy Boudreau, says the concept is simple.
When you can see directly into a store and the front counter is visible from the street, you deter criminals because they know it’s more
likely they’ll get caught.

Program expanding to other cities

Clear Zone has done so well that Circle K put it to work in other cities, like Thunder Bay, Ottawa and Toronto, as part of a pilot program.

The company’s manager of security, Sean Sportun, says in some high-risk areas, crime incidents have decreased 100 per cent. But most
of all, he says, it’s an added sense of security for shop owners and their employees.
“When we go into a store and we remove the signage that’s in there … it’s an immediate sense of safety because you can see outside and
people can see you,” said Sportun.

Peel Regional Police work with Circle K to set everything up. They also provide the store with a warning sticker to put on the door that
says, “Robbery Prevention Program in effect.” There’s also a sticker to place by the phone, so that if a store is robbed, the employee
knows what to do.

criminal from entering the store again.”

Step two is to call the police, not the store owner or a loved one, and the final step, is to leave everything as is.

“We’ve had instances where people started cleaning up and that can affect our investigation. It could remove finger- or shoe-prints,” said
Boudreau.

Sportun says Clear Zone’s overall success has led Circle K to make the program its own. In order to continue expanding throughout the
province, the company has partnered with Crime Stoppers.

Starbucks Coffee Co. is making a commitment to design, build and operate 10,000 “Greener Stores” worldwide by 2025.

The “Starbucks Greener Stores” framework is built upon comprehensive performance criteria that help ensure the company’s approach to designing, building, and operating its company-owned stores sets a new standard for green retail, according to Starbucks.

Over the next year, Starbucks plans to develop an accredited program to audit all existing company-operated stores in the United States and Canada against the framework criteria. The goal of 10,000 global “Greener Stores” encompasses existing stores, new builds, and renovations.

The framework will be co-developed by leading experts, such as the World Wildlife Fund, and audited and verified by SCS Global Services, a third-party verification organization that also oversees Starbucks Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E.) Practices.

The framework will also be open-sourced as an effort to benefit the broader retail industry, the company said.

“Simply put, sustainable coffee, served sustainably is our aspiration,” said Kevin Johnson, president, and CEO of Starbucks. “We know that designing and building green stores is not only responsible, but it is also cost-effective as well. The energy and passion of our green apron partners have inspired us to find ways to operate a greener store that will generate even greater cost savings while reducing impact.”

Energy efficiency and water stewardship
Renewable energy
Healthy environment
Responsible Materials
Waste diversion
Engagement

“Willingness for Starbucks to independently verify a large-scale complex deployment of a robust, impact-driven and an innovative multi-attribute Greener Stores program to address climate change, demonstrates leadership, integrity, and transparency, which are core values shared by SCS,” said Stanley Mathuram, vice president at SCS Global Services.

The “Starbucks Greener Stores” framework is expected to save the company an incremental $50 million in utilities over the next 10 years. The initiative was announced at The Global Climate Action Summit, held Sept. 12-14 in San Francisco.

Altria Group Inc. is heading north for its next investment. Hence taking a minority stake in Canadian cannabis company Cronos Group Inc.

The tobacco company reached an agreement to acquire newly issued shares in Toronto-based Cronos Group Inc. The transaction represents a 45-per cent equity stake in Cronos Group. This is for an aggregate investment by Altria of approximately $1.8 billion.

In Canadian dollars, the deal comes in at $16.25 per share, for an aggregate investment of approximately $2.4 billion.

As part of the agreement, at closing, Altria will have the right to nominate four directors. This is including one independent director, to serve on Cronos Group’s board of directors. As a result, the board will expand from five to seven directors.

Expected to come to a close, i.e. the state of the transaction in the first half of 2019.

“Investing in Cronos Group as our exclusive partner in the emerging global cannabis category. It represents an exciting new growth opportunity for Altria,” said Howard Willard, Altria’s chairman, and CEO.

COMPETING IN THE GLOBAL MARKETS

“We believe that Cronos Group’s excellent management team has built capabilities necessary to compete globally. Furthermore, we look forward to helping the Cronos Group realize its significant growth potential.”

According to Altria, the pact includes a warrant to acquire an additional ownership interest in Cronos Group. This is at a price of CAD $19 per share exercisable over four years from the closing date.

If exercised in full, the warrant would increase Altria’s ownership in Cronos Group. This increase will be by 10 per cent to approximately 55 per cent.

“Altria is the ideal partner for Cronos Group. Providing resources and expertise. These are resources we need to meaningfully accelerate our strategic growth,” said Mike Gorenstein. He is the Cronos Group’s chairman, president, and CEO.

“The proceeds from Altria’s investment will enable us to more quickly expand our global infrastructure and distribution footprint, while also increasing investments in [research and development] and brands that resonate with our consumers.

“Importantly, Altria shares our vision of driving long-term value through innovation. As well as we look forward to continuing to differentiate Cronos Group in this area,” he added.

The investment gives Altria a foot in the door of the emerging global cannabis sector. Talking regarding the next decade it is believed to be poised for rapid growth.

It also creates a new growth opportunity in an adjacent category. A category that is complementary to Altria’s core tobacco businesses, the Richmond-based company said.

ANALYSTS’ TAKE

Since 2016, Cowen and Co. held the thesis that cannabis will provide incremental growth for tobacco. According to Vivien Azer, director, and senior research analyst at Cowen.

From a high-level perspective, Cowen finds this deal encouraging, she explained, because:
The global cannabis opportunity remains large and untapped. Cannabis spans multiple consumer verticals including adult use as a substitute social lubricant to alcohol; health and wellness; over-the-counter pain and sleep; and pharmaceuticals.

Challenged by continuous disruption and regulation, the US tobacco’s challenges have increased.
The news came the same day that Altria announced it was discontinuing the production and distribution. This is of all MarkTen and Green Smoke vapor products. Also including VERVE oral nicotine contains products, as Convenience Store News previously reported.

Driven by the financial performances of these products. The decision companywide was based on the current and the expected performances. Also, coupled with regulatory restrictions that burden Altria’s ability to quickly improve these products.

THE FINANCIAL PERFORMANCES

“Overall, we applaud Altria’s decision to pivot fast and to move into a new adjacent category (cannabis). Something that is complementary to its core tobacco business” said Bonnie Herzog. He is the managing director of tobacco, beverage and convenience store research at Wells Fargo Securities LLC.

Altria has received committed financing totaling approximately CAD $2.4 billion from JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. Altria may consider seeking permanent financing in the future.
