Understanding what portion balance is and learning how to practice it, is an important step towards a healthier lifestyle.

Although all foods can fit into a healthy diet, it would be silly to deny that certain foods play a much bigger role in contributing to our good health than do others.

So what is Portion Balance?

As a dietitian who has worked with a wide variety of individuals, I think it’s pretty fair to say that many Canadians could benefit from incorporating the foods we know to be the best for our health in larger amounts while being a bit more mindful
about the portions of foods that aren’t quite as nutritious. That’s not to say there isn’t a place for these fun foods in our diet! There certainly is rather, it would be ideal if they did not represent the most significant portion of your daily diet.

So where we are going with this? Well, let’s think about a tool as simple as the plate model, in this case the one provided by the good folks at the Harvard School of Public Health, to get a clearer idea of what portion balance is all about.

Their model tells us that the most significant portion of our meal should come from the most nutrient dense foods, which are vegetables, with the rest being made up of all the other stuff like protein, fruit and carbohydrate rich grains like rice.

The plate model is a really simple way to help anyone understand that we can fit all of our favorite foods into our daily diet, but also that we should focus most on the foods
that are the healthiest for us.

Now although this concept is not a complex or even a surprising one, it obviously is easier said than done. That’s pretty much exactly why organizations ranging from government to industry to the retailers themselves are investing millions in public education, research and innovation to help consumers have more and better options when it comes to
food selection.


Portion Balance… is #trending

When we look at Health Canada’s data from the most recent
Canadian Community Health Survey, it’s clear that there is a
very specific group of foods that are not found in the traditional food guide that many Canadians gravitate towards. These
include: beer, fruit drinks, pop, chips & chocolate.

These foods share one very important thing in common however their serving sizes can vary widely.

Think a small square of wrapped chocolate versus a large candy bar, or a mini can of soda versus a larger can or bottle. I think it’s safe to say that the influx of products in smaller
portion sizes is no coincidence.

As we move on from the “supersize era” everyone from the everyday person to the food industry executive has come to realize that there is a need for product offerings that support the public’s portion balance goals.

It’s is given to the large body of evidence suggesting that when portion sizes go up, so does overall caloric intake, which could result in higher intakes of nutrients that many of
us simply don’t need more of, including: added sugars, saturated fat and sodium.

Even The World Health Organization recommends that keeping free sugar intake to under 10% of total calories is beneficial for human health.

So what can we do to improve our portion balance?

The Dietitians of Canada note that people are best served by avoiding the regular consumption of foods that are high in sugar, salt and fat but rather to enjoy these foods in moderation and in smaller portions.

That’s just a fancy way of saying that it’s okay to enjoy your favorite fun foods, just as long as they don’t make up the biggest part of your diet!

Take a look at this 3-step process I put together to help you think more clearly about portion balance:

1. First and foremost, acknowledge that foods such as soda, chips, and chocolate are items you consume to enjoy rather than for their nutritional value, which is completely acceptable. We are human, after all!

2. Second, acknowledge that the essence of portion balance is that the most nutrient dense foods (such as fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds) should always represent the majority of your
overall intake. Which means if you’re having a lot more veggies than chocolate, you are in a great place!

3.Finally, putting points 1 and 2 together, you can achieve both the satisfaction of eating the foods you love, and improve your overall portion balance, by taking advantage of
the fact that your favorite products are becoming increasingly available in a wide variety of serving sizes that make it much easier for you to strive towards a healthy, balanced diet that still includes the foods you love.

Gone are the days of a one-sided definition of “healthy.” Today, healthy can mean many different things to different consumers. For example like high protein, gluten-free, keto, paleo, vegan, organic, local, fresh, all-natural, free from artificial ingredients. Furthermore, they are preservative-free and non-GMO.

IMPORTANCE OF HEALTH & WELLNESS:

As health and wellness take on a larger role in consumers’ day-to-day lives. Their snack choices are evolving to match their lifestyle needs. In fact, 41 per cent of consumers want snacks to provide an energy boost. Hence, while 80 per cent are willing to pay more for snacks with health attributes. According to The Hartman Group’s The Future of Snacking study.

“We’ve seen changes in the industry as certain fads have come and gone, [but] we are also seeing a trend that consumers are willing to spend more money on great-tasting, high-quality, healthy snacks, and manufacturers are filling that demand,” said Paige Brown, director of marketing at Stryve Biltong Snacks, a maker of meat snacks.
Just as today’s definition of healthy continues to evolve, so does the demographics of the healthy snack consumer. Healthy eating is becoming the new norm for men and women. This is irrespective of young and old. As they grow more mindful of nutrition and the role it plays in their everyday lives is huge.

However, if there is one thing that rings true across healthy snack consumers. It is that they’ll flex different food values on different occasions.

“In terms of pre-packaged snacks. You see a lot of different need states represented in different ways than in the past,” said Betsy Frost. Betsy is the director of platform marketing innovation at General Mills Convenience. “‘Healthy’ snacking was for a time about low-calorie options. Where you often traded taste or texture of the ‘real thing’ for a lower calorie option or portion-controlled 100-calorie pack. Now, we see healthy snacking mirror the core values of the consumers.”

LIKING OF SHOPPERS & CONSUMERS:

As shoppers seek out brands that align with how they see themselves. Hence, more and healthier snack brands are emerging in the packaged snacks categories. Three macro trends that are driving this, according to Minneapolis-based General Mills Convenience, are:

1.The changing of food values.

Consumers are looking for more real food experiences.

2.Consumers’ changing eating habits.

“People snack more throughout the day and are looking for snacks to do more jobs. Hence, its for them in comparison to what they have in the past. These are such as a meal replacement or mini-meal. Includes a before- or after-workout supplement, or a mental or energy boost,” Frost explained.

3.The boom of the food entrepreneur.

“With more snacks being in more non-traditional outlets, food entrepreneurs have found it easier to turn a home hack that served their personal needs into thriving, purpose-driven organizations,” she added.

Kirk Bailey, product director of grocery and snacks at convenience distributor McLane Co. Inc., identifies an additional trend he finds to be relevant to the topic: an increase in the amount of awareness of how someone’s diet can directly correlate with their health.

“As these health-conscious consumers become more educated on how to live a healthy lifestyle, they will continue to seek items that have simple ingredients and attributes that have a positive effect on their health vs. just grabbing anything to hold them over until their next meal,” said Bailey.
Amid this continuing shift, convenience store retailers shouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to serve healthy snack consumers — across all of their varied need states.

So, what’s the best way for c-store retailers to offer healthier snacks to their customers?

McLane’s Bailey suggests they incorporate a small section within their salty snack set that includes six to nine items that are in a highly visible area of the set, such as the top right corner.

Then, if retailers find these items do well for their stores, they should consider expanding to a three-foot “Better-for-You” endcap, preferably in a prime location within the store that lets customers know these healthier items are available.

After more than 60 years of dishing out beef burgers, a Canadian fast-food chain has found new success in an unexpected product: a patty made from peas, mung beans and beets.
A&W Food Services of Canada Inc., the country’s second-largest hamburger chain, is tapping into growing demand for plant-based protein by becoming the first national burger chain to offer California-based Beyond Meat’s burger on its menu in July.
The Beyond Meat burgers sold out nationwide in a matter of weeks, said Chief Executive Officer Susan Senecal. The veggie burgers will be back in stock across Canada Oct. 1.
“It became even more popular than we had expected,” Senecal said in a telephone interview from Vancouver. “Plant-based protein has gained in popularity and it really is something people are very interested in.”
A&W is the latest meat-focused company that sees growing opportunities in plants as some consumers turn away from traditional protein amid concerns about environmental impact, animal welfare and maintaining a healthy diet. Tyson Foods Inc., the largest U.S. meat producer, in 2016 acquired 5 per cent of Beyond Meat, which has also gotten the backing of billionaire investor Bill Gates. Maple Leaf Foods Inc., Canada’s largest packaged meat company, is now stocking shelves with plant-based imitators after acquiring vegetarian producer Lightlife Foods.
A&W’s Beyond Meat burger builds on the company’s strategy to focus on better ingredients, Laurentian Bank Securities analyst Elizabeth Johnston said in an email. While these new products have generally been positive for organic growth, it’s too early to quantify the potential impact of the burger, she said. The A&W Revenue Royalties Income Fund, which invests the securities of A&W Food Services, is up 7.3 per cent this year and hit a 15-month high in August.
Five years ago, A&W started to home in on growing consumer demand for more information and transparency about their food, said Senecal, noting the chain now offers beef raised without any added hormones or steroids and chicken raised without antibiotics. The plant-based burger builds on consumer desire for more natural foods and the company is constantly monitoring how the trend develops, she said
